Italy There is only one thing I d like to say we got what we deserve And I m referring to both, critics and Parrella.I consider what Parrella does in this book simply disgusting This is not literature This book is merely a cheap trick for pleasing those who miss a folkloristic touch of verism and realism in their ivory towers.I am talking about you You, literary critics who praise those under 30 novelists who are using dialect rather than dialectic forgetting the Italian grammar on purpose, maybe for hiding the fact that they don t really know it.Parrella knows the Italian grammar, at least. And this is actually an aggravation for her work In Per Grazia Ricevuta she pretends to put herself in the shoes of people she doesn t really know simple and plain youngsters Poor and untaught folks who are accidentally living in the same town of the author Naples It s just a pity that Parrella is not Matilde Serao, nor Erri De Luca or, say, Curzio Malaparte Parrella pretends to talk and think like her folkloristic characters But not really knowing the way they talk and think she tries to get by She clutches at straws She sounds pretentious and unrealistic Her bad faith in this process is so clear that she even decides to distance herself from her unfortunate characters by switching from first to third person every now and then We can almost picture Parrella raising up her hands and saying This is not me I ve studied diachronic linguistics at the university I know how to spell the term epistemology And I even know what epistemology means Look, I am just a puppeteer.I am sorry, really sorry for being that sarcastic, but I have to.This book is the summa of what I hate the most U n s asi m n zn m italsk autorka, ve v born m p ekladu Alice Flemrov vydala Paseka Tenhle tl quello che scrive sembra utile, non un aggettivo o un avverbio di troppo una volta lessi che Twain pensava che gli avverbi fossero assolutamente inutili, ecco credo che se avesse letto la Parrella avrebbe avuto un ulteriore conferma del suo teorema Forse se avessi saputo prima che mi sarebbe piaciuta cos tanto avrei letto un racconto ogni tanto, cos durava di pi , ma non credo ci sarei comunque riuscita, sono racconti che somigliano alle ciliegie, anche se hanno un retrogusto amarissimo, quello che deriva da un ironia che non lascia scampo Fianalmente qualcosa che sembra valere la pena tra i nuovi scrittori giovani italiani It took me a while to read this book because I picked it up and then couldn t get into the mood to read before picking up another book I m not sure why I didn t stick never been to Naples myself, so I m not sure how well represented it was But the stories are all based in a city where there is a culture of arts and gang violence and hardships all mixed with complicated individuals who lead completely different lives yet always on the fence of danger Actually many of them encounter police arrests the stories are so different, but you can see them living in this one place All of the novellas are snippets of these individuals, so no you won t get to hear their whole lives stories and when I realized I wanted to knowfor each one, I was hooked Great this book of short stories, which I picked up on a whim based on my love of other Europa Editions books I found myself getting very attached to the characters in these stories and wondering what lives they continue to lead after the episodes narrated here Parrella creates situations that are in a way universal to modern urban dwellers, but also felt particularly napolitano. For Grace Received ☞ Modern day Naples is a city
