James Charters, a 35 yr old guy whoworks as a messenger for a lawyer, is visiting death row in Florida More specifically, he is visiting Pearl Mantinover, the sexiest woman to ever face the electric chair But, Prison had not been kind to her She was no longer the black haired vixen who had cursed the prosecutor up one side and blistered him down the other She thought she got a raw deal because she worked in a cafe and lived with a man without marrying him Charters somehow winds up racing James Charters, a 35 yr old guy whoworks as a messenger for a lawyer, is visiting death row in Florida More specifically, he is visiting Pearl Mantinover, the sexiest woman to ever face the electric chair But, Prison had not been kind to her She was no longer the black haired vixen who had cursed the prosecutor up one side and blistered him down the other She thought she got a raw deal because she worked in a cafe and lived with a man without marrying him Charters somehow winds up racing around town trying to prove her innocence, no easy feat when the radio is reporting that he just committed a couple of murders and the mob is after him about 10,000 he conned out of a wiseguy It is nonstop action until the end in this great pulp novel Keene got it right when he wrote this one The atmosphere is created just right the characters are great you really feel as if you are back in the late fifties or early sixties in a small Florida town A great story told well.Like Death House Doll, Keene is telling another tale about an innocent woman locked in prison and the guy who thinks he can get her out and find the real killer The stories are quite different however Wake Up To Murder 1952 This is a Day Keene paperback original about a young legal assistant, jealous of his scumbag lawyer boss who took a bribe to let a frail fry for a murder she didn t commit This has a strong message in it about money not buying happiness and being happy with what you have The working stiffs here are consistently morally superior to hoods and white collar crooks Talky but it moves right along. I gave this a weak 3 stars I am a fan of Day Keene but this wasn t quite as good as novels like Dead Dolls Don t Talk or Hunt the Killer There seemed to be a lack of cohesion Other reviewers mentioned that it is fast moving and it was But the characters, other than Charters and Lou, were very sketchy I actually kept confusing Cass and Cade I found it to bejumpy than fast moving I didn t really like Charters and I wasn t able to identify with his problems the way I would with an I gave this a weak 3 stars I am a fan of Day Keene but this wasn t quite as good as novels like Dead Dolls Don t Talk or Hunt the Killer There seemed to be a lack of cohesion Other reviewers mentioned that it is fast moving and it was But the characters, other than Charters and Lou, were very sketchy I actually kept confusing Cass and Cade I found it to bejumpy than fast moving I didn t really like Charters and I wasn t able to identify with his problems the way I would with an unlikable character in anoirish setting Lou s behavior wasn t entirely convincing and Kendall s stalking of May never felt right either The ending felt like something the blue nosed contingent of sun City forced Keene to write to have a nice happy ending Other than that it was an OK crime mystery novel with a lot of twists and turns that each reader will have to decide how plausible they all were Wake Up to Murder by Day Keene I found to be just OKit doesn t come anywhere close to his Sleep With The Devil which is one of my noir faves Day Keene is always good, but yet, never great Not quite in the top tier with Chandler, Hammett, Thompson, MacDonald, Westlake, Williams, Highsmith, etc I can t quite put my finger on it. &EBOOK ★ Wake Up to Murder ↬ Cover art by Robert Maguire
