a jester hat Does make any sense until you read the book, then you find it hilarious and feel a little sorry for the guy.The book is written in first person, in the perspective of the main character, Jim O Reilly, how he ended up the way he ended up It begins after everything that has happened, and he tries to explain i exactly i what happened to him.Jim O Reilly became famous, not by his talent or skill, but by accident He was sitting in a tree, eating paper in order to destroy evidence of his e mails with his best friend, Zanny Manning. It all started with the school play, b A Midsummer Night s Dream b While trying out for the school play against his will for his friend Gene who wanted to get into Tuftsand thought he neededon his record Jim finds out that he loves Zanny, his best friend ever since kindergarten However, she doesn t share his feelings She likes his twin brother Jake, a punky crackpot, who she finds charming , charismatic , profound While realizing his love for his best friend, he finds out that something was wrong at home his mother had just left them Jake ends up struggling to figure out why his mother would run away from home, as well as try to tell Zanny his love without explicitly telling her for a short while, Zanny thought Jake had professed his love for her He ends up finding his mother and stalking his parents to find out what led to the break up of his family and creating a fake e mail and professing his love through that medium.Zanny eventually finds out, and confesses to Jim that she knew Jim, realizing how stupid he has been, tries to delete all evidence by running into Zanny s room, looking for all the e mails and destroying them Running away from her parents they re not that involved in the book, so it s assumed they knew nothing , he climbed out of the window and onto the tree and begins eating the e mails Gives new meaning to the phrase, eating your words , doesn t it The police comes and tries to get him down, failing, as he wanted to finish eating and destroying the e mails before anyone found out about it Just then, a photographer passes by, and it turns out that he took a snapshot of him eating his words The snapshot depicted him eating paper, but the word that was just sticking out was the word Love Zanny had enlarged the font.He ends up achieving fame, and although he didn t want to become famous, he did it for the sake of Zanny, who is his girlfriend after that stunt He writes this as a response to the book she s written, i Love Doesn t Grow on Trees i , to dispel some of her false words Reading about love and how it makes people end up doing crazy stupid things is one of those common themes in books however, Neenan makes it funny as well as surprising Usually, the ending to these types of books is that the guy gets the girl because she finds out that she loves him as well, but in this book, Neenan doesn t do that In a way, the guy does get the girl Jim does get Zanny to become his girlfriend , but not in an expected way Zanny s dream is to be famous, and using Jim s picture perfect snapshot, she had her chance By writing this book, Jim tells America how stupidly in love he was with Zanny Manning, and how he can fall out of love with her as time passes His parents foreshadowed his love life, in a way, just without the fame that came out of nowhere Oh man, I ve had the plot of this book stuck in my head for a couple weeks For the life of me, I couldn t remember anything other than it was funny and there was a boy sitting in a tree I finally figured out what the book is, and although I remember nothing other than he was literally eating his words, I d recommend this It obviously made an impression on me.
