I received an advance copy of this book from net galley and the publisher in return for an honest review Release date for this book is 26 May 2020 This is a cute whimsical rom com of a story This is definitely a story that millennials will relate to and even though I am a bit older than a millennial, I still felt drawn to the characters This story is basically an updated take on the movie you ve got mail It was an easy read with a very satisfying ending I enjoyed it immensely. After being quite intrigued by the tagline, Cyrano meets the 21st century, my mind could only imagine the lines awaiting me Full review to follow shortly, but for now, I say to Tash Skilton, I do not competing dating service sites who don t realize that they re Cyrano de Bergeracking each other on behalf of their clients whenever they chat online It s a concept that has a lot of promise, but I had a lot of trouble getting into the romance The dating site element feels so unrealistic Social media sites don t have unlimited money Hiring ghostwriters and then letting them wine and dine clients seems expensive Also, in this digital age, everything is done online with Zoom or Skype meetings, so it felt weird that Miles and Zoey would meet up with their clients in New York in person and then even watch their dates to see how things are going I didn t really like either of the two leads At first, I LOATHED Zoey She was so awful and petty in the beginning I couldn t stand her playful fighting over the free pastry goods with Miles I just wanted to be like, LOOK HERE, KAREN Eventually I warmed up to her, but by the end of the book, I no longer liked Miles, because naturally when the romance element finally picks up, there has to be a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING to ruin everything And it does, I mean Ruin everything. You call that a grovel It was a simper, at best It hinges on way too many coincidences Not only are they Cyrano de Bergeracking each other s clients, but the CEOs of their firms are ex husband and ex wife, they both know the same gay couple who s getting married, they live next door to each other, and it turns out that Zoey s friend at work is actually Miles s sister who s working for both companies like a spy , only it never gets out because everything she s about to bring him up OH NO SOMETHING HAPPENS LOOK AT THAT I just felt like the book was working overtime doing double gymnastics to make sure everything fit puzzle piece neat, but because it was so over the top, it really didn t work as well as it thought it did.Things I did like diversity heroine is half Filipina, hero is a Jewslim , half Jewish and half Muslim Egyptian although why is the hero so pale on the book cover In the book he s described as having dark skin Fun descriptions of New York s, um, quirky culture although it seems kind of sparkly and sugar glossed the way San Francisco s frequently is there s an edge to that glamor Zoey s friend, Mary, star of a cult classic fantasy movie, was fun but she popped up in the book way too often as comic relief The epistolary chat elements were also pretty well done.I don t know, maybe I went into this with expectations that were too high At first, it did have a fun early 2000s chick lit vibe that I really liked, but then the heroine started getting annoying, and the big misunderstanding was just icing on the omg why tho cake I think some people might enjoy this romance a lot but for me it ended up falling a little flat, even though I did read to the end Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review 2.5 stars Mismatched in Manhattan known as Ghosting in some territories follows the story of interesting texts messages to help clients of dating apps makesuccessful matches Zoey finds herself writing for a girl named Bree and Miles for a guy named Jude who surprise surprise end up being matched and all sorts of Cyrano de Bergerac style drama ensues. The book is described as an ode to the New York set romantic comedies that we all know and love think When Harry Met Sally, You ve Got Mail and it certainly shares a similar style of snappy dialogue from those famous rom com stalwarts And that dialogue was actually my favourite part of the novel I really enjoyed the moments where dialogue and instant messaging was used to tell the story between Zoey and Miles as to me it really helped to liven up what was for the most part quite a slow paced novel I do enjoy a slow burn romance but I think this novel erred a little too much on the slow side I found the first half of the novel quite difficult to get through as to me it felt as if the plot was plodding along to a predictable ending rather than feeling properly engaging And part of this problem was how each chapter was begun with an email from either Zoey or Miles respective bosses Both characters were far too hammy in tone and not only did their presence in the novel feel super cringe but these melodramatic emails took too much of the attention away from the main story of this book.As for the main characters I really didn t care much about either of them during the first half of the novel Zoey was meant to be dealing with a lot of anxiety but I felt that this was poorly portrayed as instead of feeling empathetic towards her I found her to be too whiny which I m sure was not the intention of the authors And as for Miles He was dealing with a broken engagement and needing to find a place to live but he too had this whiny quality and at times was a little too overbearing and borderline smug in tone However, in the second half of the book things dramatically improved This was when there wasphysical and verbal interaction between the main characters therefore I was able to get a sense of how suited to each other they were and began to feel muchinvested in their relationship I particularly enjoyed a scene where Zoey had a birthday dinner with her parents and how Miles supported her during that event It was the first moment that I truly felt Zoey came alive on the page as it helped to inform why she was so anxiety ridden and it also helped to show that Miles wasthan just a smug kind of guy The book certainly requires some suspension of belief too lots of things are a little bit too neat and convenient e.g the way the dating companies are set up, how Zoey knows Miles sister, Zoey and Miles bosses are actually rivals who are divorcing each other, they end up living in the same building etc etc but that s to be expected in light and fluffy books such as this So definitely this was a book of two halves for me It s such a shame that the beginning was so slow as this had a very enjoyable, whimsical feel to it once the book got goingAn e copy of this book was kindly provided to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review This edition that have been our pick me ups when we most needed it. I loved this SO MUCH It s just so perfectly rom com and made me so happy Both authors have written books I ve really enjoyed in the past but tbh this wildly exceeded my expectations and brought me so much joy. primary, all I enjoyed the setting as well As someone who loves the place where I live, I understand but Miles s and Zoey s ties to their geography As someone who likes experiencing new things but really needs to feel brave in doing so, I understood Zoey s tendency to stay close to her apartment in her new city Anyway, I really liked both characters Miles s relationships really helped establish him as someone other than the New York City snobby hipster, and Zoey s showed her grounding existedto a person or people than a place And this book made me laugh At least, it was totally amusing and enjoyable And instead of being one of the worst moments, the reveal was a best moment It s a slow burn, but well paced, although I might ve liked a littlepost misunderstanding And, as I said the beginning felt clunky Either I got used to it or it became less awkward as the book moved on I would give this a 3.5, rounding up bc I can see revisiting and because it was a super charming diversion enjoyable, hard to put down, witty dialogues, and a slow burn romance. Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for providing me with an e arc in exchange for my honest review
