I really like this author s writing on the sentence level in fact I read one of her poetry collections years ago and loved it , but I found both the character development and pacing in this novel lacking Nicole is a lost 24 year old still living in her crap hometown when her childhood BFF Honey shows up after a mysterious 6 year absence What follows is an obsessive love story with a woman involved in a lot of shady stuff But I wasn t convinced of the love story, didn t empathize with Nic, an I really like this author s writing on the sentence level in fact I read one of her poetry collections years ago and loved it , but I found both the character development and pacing in this novel lacking Nicole is a lost 24 year old still living in her crap hometown when her childhood BFF Honey shows up after a mysterious 6 year absence What follows is an obsessive love story with a woman involved in a lot of shady stuff But I wasn t convinced of the love story, didn t empathize with Nic, and found the pacing of events at times too slow and other times too fast Noir thrillers like this might not be my bag I m not sure 4.5 stars and maybe you ll go away and never call, and a taste of honey is worse than none at alllyrics to I Second That Emotion by Smokey RobinsonBrenda Brooks Honey is a spellbinding little noir like novel that, with a few necessary modern day tweaks, has the sort of plot that is reminiscent of the pulp fiction paperbacks or black white crime films of the 40 s and 50 s Other than a moment or two of playing fast and loose with established mystery story rules this was a tight, 4.5 stars and maybe you ll go away and never call, and a taste of honey is worse than none at alllyrics to I Second That Emotion by Smokey RobinsonBrenda Brooks Honey is a spellbinding little noir like novel that, with a few necessary modern day tweaks, has the sort of plot that is reminiscent of the pulp fiction paperbacks or black white crime films of the 40 s and 50 s Other than a moment or two of playing fast and loose with established mystery story rules this was a tight, involving book with a wily but ambiguous title character.Narrator Nicole Nic Hewitt is 24 years old, a piano playing crooner who belts out tunes at her small hometown s casino the only thing turning a profit in the depressed little burg somewhere in rural Canada Reeling from the death of one parent and the disabling of another courtesy of a car crash caused by a drunk driver, the reserved Nic could use a friendly face to go along with her insurance settlement That would be when lifelong bestie Honey Ramone returns to town Honey and her mom Inez disappeared unexpectedly six years ago and it s been radio silence ever since As best friends are wont to do Nic and Honey pick up like nothing s changed, but it blossoms into romance.Honey soon explains to Nic what she was doing during those six years or maybe it s just her version of said events beware those tricky noir dames , and Nic is then quickly pulled into an increasingly quicksand type of scenario involving siphoned bank funds, an upset ex paramour, a dead body, an apparent kidnapping, and ransom demands And on top of THAT a plainclothes Mountie comes a knockin shades of TV s Columbo and repeatedly asks for Nic s take on the situation For the most part the puzzle pieces all fit and the mood stays suspenseful mysterious til the moody conclusion Won in a GLOW Shelf Awareness giveaway This review is my honest opinion. The writing in this book wasn t really my style The pacing seemed a bit slow to me, and I felt like I was given information in dumps, whether it was a flashback or one of the characters telling the story of what happened. The plot itself was okay as well, but it was too similar to other books I ve read to be exciting or engaging I also found the main characters the narrator and Honey, especially hard to connect with. Thanks to net galley.com and ECW Press for the advance PDF file for my honest review This was my first read from author Brenda Brooks While I thought her writing style seemed to be all over the place or perhaps it was that way due to Nicole telling the story in Honey and I did feel the pace was off at times With that said, it still was a good enough of a read, that Brooks kept me turning pages and engrossed with how it would end While I liked the character of Nicole Hewett, easy to relate Thanks to net galley.com and ECW Press for the advance PDF file for my honest review This was my first read I m not a fan of first person style novels, although this one works with Nicole telling the story, verse flipping around giving multiple points of view, you ve got a mix of betrayal, it s a dark and twisted tale The only flaw too me is, that Nicole and Honey are long time friends, they also where lovers as young teenagers and would she really forgive her for disappearing from her life for 6 years Nicole just seems like in those 6 years she would have a new girlfriend, being a piano player, she would have had and can t see her from 18 to 24 years old, not having a lover With this being author Brenda Brooks debut book, definitely will be interested in seeing what s next and Honey does enough to make me want to readof her writing A slow moving suspenseful noir of a novel that follows Nicole, Honey was a bizarre tale of obsession, desire, desperation, and murder I ve seen the writing style described as modern noir and I think that s pretty accurate It felt, at times, like Michael Scarn was narrating the book or something which I didn t totally hate, to be honest Although this book didn t do it for me, I would certainly read another book by Brenda Books in the future However, Honey was a weird gal and Nicole was even weirder Nicole s next level obsession with the vagabond dri Honey was a bizarre tale of obsession, desire, desperation, and murder I ve seen the writing style described as modern noir and I think that s pretty accurate It felt, at times, like Michael Scarn was narrating the book or something which I didn t totally hate, to be honest Although this book didn t do it for me, I would certainly read another book by Brenda Books in the future However, Honey was a weird gal and Nicole was even weirder Nicole s next level obsession with the vagabond drifter con artist Honey was too much for me Reading about the two of them was like watching a slow speed train wreck.Thank you, ECW Press , for the opportunity to read and review Honey Not all books are for everyone and even though this one didn t click with me, it might for you You can check it out for yourself on October 1, 2019
