Yes, but The Black Door is much, muchAnd you can t tell this story without it It will probably go beyond your comfort zone, but if you get past the fucked upedness of what can turn some people on, you will be touched by this story. This story digs deep Even deeper than The Red Door So deep that labeling it erotica is misleading The Black Door is not just erotica While Becca has a dark tale about being held in a sex traffick I know what you are thinking BDSM is dark, hardcore erotica Yes, but The Black Door is much, muchAnd you can t tell this story without it It will probably go beyond your erotica is misleading The Black Door is not just erotica While Becca has a dark tale about being held in a sex trafficking group, her flashbacks are offset by the light of her healing In helping others, we help ourselves, and Colby knows this when he brings her to help at a halfway house Beyond the unusual romance, the openly sexual characters, and the BDSM theme of The Black Door Club is a deeply thought out story of recovery from shattering circumstances, and honoring a loving relationship no matter how unconventional When two people can share an understanding about the power of sex to break apart and then forge together stronger, you reach a new level of appreciating the raw power of the physical side of a relationship I get it, and WOW This is a tough one for me to review, because as a whole, the story was very good However, the technical aspect of the story jarred me and pulled me out enough where I was left feeling lack luster about the whole thing I want to note that I didn t read book one, but I did go download it so at first I was lost on the themes of this story Once I realized it was a book two I had to read it as if I had read book one As a whole, this story has the vast potential of being GREAT Literally, for a t This is a tough one for me to review, because as a whole, the story was very good However, the technical aspect of the story jarred me and pulled me realized it was a book two I had to read it as if I had read book one As a whole, this story has the vast potential of being GREAT Literally, for a theme that could be easily labeled dark romance it could dominant the genre I m not a huge fan on dark romance Mostly because I take issue with glamorizing human trafficking On the other hand, when you tell a story properly, it can work This has all the markings of a story that could work My likes It was unique In a world full of over saturated ideas and nonsense, this plot had me really wanting to know how it would end It has meat, it is just lacking a proper execution The characters worked Albeit written very lack luster and in a grey tone, it was very hard for me to connect with anyone until the last few chapters of the book It was as if the author found her rhythm and started to fly But at the end of the day, a book is about its characters Those need to outshine even a good storyline in order for a book to wow the reader. My issues Now I normally don t review books this way but I wanted to be honest and not a totally a hole, and if the author happens to read this I don t want her to curl up in a ball and cry Trust me I know how that feels and I see the potential this author has If she takes anything away from this review I want it to help not discourage First off, the dialogue tags are a mess I didn t know who was talking half the time Someone would say something, and then someone else would feel the emotion I had to reread the dialogue quite often until I could lock down who was saying what, and who was feeling what emotions With the poor dialogue tags came stilted unrealistic dialogue The words felt unemotional and robotic Remember when people are talking you can talk in slang It s okay Contractions are a good thing in dialogue Second, the editing was a mess I m not sure if this was a draft before edits or not, but I really struggled with how things were ordered and placed in paragraphs It didn t have good transitions and it didn t flow from one scene to the next how it needed to The BDSM needed some work As someone in the lifestyle I appreciated how accurate the author was, while trying to put a darker spin on it My brain had to shut off at the idea of a clue that didn t allow safe words and if you used them you got kicked out for life Once I swallowed down my judgments, as a masochist, I kinda wanted to know where The Black Door was lol Third, my advice Which I normally don t slot into reviews, but like I said I NEED this author to be great She has so much untapped potential that I was screaming at the book in my head Find critique partners that are NOT your friends, and that will be very honest with you Sometimes it will hurt, and you are going to pout and stomp your feet, but at the end of the day, it will help your writing I would also suggest a proofreader that is not the current editor As many set of eyes you can get you your work the better As a whole, like I said the story was good I struggled with the characters because they weren t giving me enough to care That opening scene was such a punch in the gut and then it sort of just went frozen on me until the ending build up I found myself enjoying the secondary charactersthan the two main protagonists I will read The Red Door and I will read the next book in the series because now I gotta know if they catch the Auctioneer duh I just hope that a littletime is spent in the revision process because I want these books to be GREAT You can write a full length book in 14 days, but it takes an army to revise that sucker I received a copy via The Book Enthusiast Promotions 3.5 STARS for me.hmmm so this one I was super stoked about I mean cause one Becca has my name and two it seemed like her story was gonna be a bit darker.Definitely had some darkness to it The flash backs and all that were sad to relive but they were good to know what she had been through I also felt the revenge Becca wanted so again another plus.TBlackD just didn t hold my attention like I thought it would The way the story flowed kind of didn t work well for me I loved The Red Door so read 3.5 STARS for me.hmmm so this one I was to write a review for this, but it s left me so annoyed that I need to vent There were parts of the book I really enjoyed, but by about 68% I was just so hacked off by some of the characters that I DNF d it I m probably going to sound like some uber feminist by the end of this, which believe me I m not However this book perpetrated that idea that any woman who puts her own needs and wants first MUST be a bitch, which really disappoints me given the author is I presum I wasn t originally going to write a review for this, but it s left me so annoyed that I need to vent There were parts of the not However this book perpetrated that idea that any woman who puts her own needs and wants first MUST be a bitch, which really disappoints me given the author is I presume also female So lets start with the hero Colby He seemed ok at first, if a little hard to pinpoint what his exact character was meant to be However his continually treating Becca like a mushroom keeping her in the dark and feeding her s t , keeping secrets and repeatedly lying by omission was just not on He was a douche of the grandest order and really didn t deserve Becca In fact I spent a chunk of what I read hoping Becca would wise up, dump his ass and take up with Sledge, who appeared to be the only decent male character in the book.Colby I want you in my life forever manipulated and manoeuvred Becca like the worst of abusers He kept two humongous secrets view spoiler 1 legally they were married even though there had been no ceremony but as FBI he d managed to fiddle the paperwork and 2 he d been married before hide spoiler Now Becca understandably was a little upset by secret 1, so what did our big hero do He sulked because Becca wasn t overjoyed by the news and then threw himself at one of her friends Then when Becca went off with Sledge he thought she was being unreasonable and out of order No apology for his dickish behaviour No Becca was a bitch because she didn t allow a man to walk all over her Secret 2 she just took in her stride, she only found out via eavesdropping a conversation when he was drunk but was fine with it WHY Don t get me started on Calvin Every time that guy breathed I wanted to shoot him He repeatedly told Becca she was a selfish bitch, even after knowing that she d had to fake her death in order to stay alive Even knowing that SHE HAD BEEN SEX TRAFFICKED, REPEATEDLY RAPED, ABUSED, BEATEN and was no doubt suffering from PTSD No because poor little Calvin had been so traumatised by how upset his partner Jackson was Jackson and Becca are siblings by Becca s death Excuse me you poor little tiny wiener of a man but this is a girl who had recently been rescued from the most horrific and traumatic abuse you could ever experience Not surprisingly she was struggling a little with life and not really thinking straight But clearly Calvin believes sympathy is only found in the dictionary between shit and syphilis because he certainly didn t have any for an abuse survivor who was still massively traumatised Walk a mile in her shoes THEN feel like you can judge her Yeah that guy pissed me off big time Especially as he was a fairly selfish ass himself, as were many of the MALE characters But apparently it s ok for the man to be a selfish prick, but if a woman ever puts her own needs first she is a bitch.Becca I loved, and Petal Two strong, independent and tough women They, along with otherwise a decent story line, are what kept me reading as long as I did However I read for relaxation and enjoyment, sadly this wasn t giving me either of those things, hence the DNF
