her freshman year I m a 35 year old guy who grew up as the oldest of 4 boys I have 3 sons and 1 daughter I read and hated the Twilight books and readily admit to having NO understanding of the female mind I was honestly just hoping not to hate it.Then I read itAnd I have to admit that I really enjoyed it I absolutely love books that are heavy on characters and dialogue and this book hit a home run on that And not just flowery prose but real conversation I realize that style isn t for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed the real dialogue which served as the foundation for this story.Another part for me that was personally entertaining was the ode to our high school years I recognized so much of our Chaffey isms in the story From the early morning ditching to the Steel Grill Iron Skillet to the orange and black of the Carver Bengals orange and black Chaffey Tigers Not too mention trying to determine which teachers were based off of the ones we had Lastly, the breadth of teen issues the book tackles was both refreshing and frightening Ditching classes, profanity, sexual themes, alcohol use, drug use and parental interactionthis book had it all I have a daughter about 6 years away from being a freshman and I think I am hoping that she will be a cross between Meg and StephBottom line Read this book and you ll enjoy it And lest you all think I m full of it and doing what I said I wouldn tI m already on Chapter 5 in the sequel Double Threat My Bleep Now I will be the big bad trash talking reviewer, but I really don t know how this book got 4.04 for average rating REALLY WHY Megan Megan is the typical high school popular with mostly boys girl she has the looks, the brains, always funny according to the boys in the book I didn t find any humour in the things she does or says and not afraid to eat a big bunch of french fries Clich 1 Alex is her love interest, the popular, but kinda not dumb jock So, they hit it off, then comes Amy, the bestie turned back stabber of Megan, and steals him Clich 2 Then Megan tries to get together with the bestie of Alex Clich 3 who of course has a girlfriend, as it turns out on the night of the Homecoming prom Clich 4 Then it turns out that Kesshia or something like this, I didn t bother with names does drugs with her new teammates and Megan doesn t know how to solve this Clich 5 And then I didn t continue You can t blame me for this So, final count Stars 1 Pages I didn t read 140 or so that s half of the book, in case you re wondering Amount of affection Megan shows towards people mostly boys NONE FREAKIN NONE.Cich s TOO little fun No one suspects this group of girls to bethan innocent because they all have good grades and they re all enrolled into the honor classes Megan thought freshman year of high school would be a breeze, but it s nothing of the sort When friendship and lovers collide, everything is at stake, including Megan s relationship with Alex High school is not what it s cut out to be for Megan even if she is a Double Threat Nonetheless, she s enjoying the ride, going to parties and meeting new friends If Megan plays her cards right, she may catch Alex s eye this time, if someone else hasn t already I was truly surprised with the outcome of So I m A Double Threat I didn t expect to be consumed by such a story and I love what Julie Prestsater did I do admit that at first I had trouble getting into the story because it s been such a long time since I thought about high school It s not something I want to relive or go back to despite the good and the bad times alike However, So I m A Double Threat reminded me of those years in a good way Once I got over my apprehensions, I was able to enjoy Meg s story through and through Julie Prestater does such an amazing job of capturing the high school life She really portrays the life of a high school teenager perfectly The anticipation of the first day of school, excitement of meeting new people, the thrill of wanting a boy to like you, the popularity, the cliques, the friendships, the parties, the betrayals, the backstabbing, the heartbreak, the intrigue and gossips are all present in this story and make it oh so real It really brought me back to those years of high school It made me miss the freedom that Meg and her friends felt It made me miss being young and being able to do what I want without so much responsibility and stress It was slightly nostalgic, but really uplifting I really enjoyed getting to know Megan I didn t like her at first because I couldn t really connect to her, but theI read, theI warmed and opened up to her She was fun and quirky She was smart and cool and she really made me laugh with her endless string of jokes and sarcasm and the spunk she always had even when she was down She totally reminded me of what it was like to be her age I loved that she cared about her grades and schoolwork, but still was able to balance having fun with her friends and going out to the different parties while being somewhat responsible I love how she seemed perfect, but was still able to make mistakes She was strong, but had this vulnerability that I loved I especially loved the moments when Megan s imagination ran away from her When she got carried away with her day dreams, there was no denying how fun and real she was I really liked reading how Megan grew up and mature during her freshman year in high school I thought she really came into herself and with everything that happened to her, I thought she handled everything with such grace.I absolutely loved Megan and Alex s relationship I could completely relate to Megan s crush on Alex because I have been through that as well I liked how Megan and Alex handled their situation with maturity I loved how they kept being friends, but at the same time I was so frustrated because I just wanted them to be together already They were so cute and perfect for each other I thought that they really fit despite the age difference I really fell for Alex He s such a sweetheart and I loved how he cared so much for Megan He was so protective of her He definitely became a best friend that Megan could always have I can see why it was easy for Megan to talk to Alex about anything despite her intense feelings for him They make a good match and there was no way I couldn t help but root for the both of them All the secondary characters were cool too I love how Megan had such a good relationship with all her friends I loved their dynamic and how strong all of them seemed while still having that innocence about the world They all made an awesome bunch and it was super fun to read their banter and interactions with one another They made me smilethan once I really felt like I was a part of their group too I loved how Julie was able to make me have a love and hate relationship with Eric and Ben I loved both of them equally, but some of their actions completely angered me I was surprised at how affected I was with what was going on with these characters I really came to love them all and I was sad to see it all come to an end when I finished the book I loved getting swept up in all the drama It really felt like I was living and experiencing it all with Megan I felt her happiness, her anger and her pain Julie made So I m a Double Threat completely relatable She brings in real life problems in the story that deal with love, friendship, sex, alcohol and drug consumption that should definitely be addressed during a teenager s time in high school She weaves these aspects into the story with subtly that make the readers learn ways in which to handle such topics situations when one is faced with such a thing I liked how she added that into the story to give it muchdepth Overall, So I m A Double Threat was a quick and fun read It brings back some memories from the past and will definitely having you wished to redo it all over again You really get sucked into the story and journey of Megan s first year in high school that by the end, you wished there was4 out of 5 stars Thanks to Roxanne from Bewitching Book Tours and Julie for providing a review copy In no way do they influence my opinion review of this Prestsater wrote a book, that I think, accurately portrays a plausible freshman year of high school If you are interested in a teenager s modern talethis will work for you I love when author s can capture accurate conversations and she did While I never spoke as her characters didI could hear them speaking in my head this is a compliment Her main characters self speak was maybe too close to out speak though On the whole, I don t think this will be added to my re reads list But, as a once read I think that there is value in it Evenimpressed am I by Julie Prestsater herself I learned that she wasn t a reader herself until college She also took a challenge, and flow wrote this book in just a month I think many people who read like the idea of writing their own novelbut, how many of us ever even start, much less finish I m in the never even tried groupso, I suppose, my critique of her book really has no weight behind it I should get out a pen Another compliment it reminds me of Stephenie Meyer Only in the high school setting situation way excluding fantastical creatures, of course HoweverMegan is a muchlikeable character that Bella I cared about Meganwhile I wished the Volturi would to all the senior parties That s where it started for me Meg never gave any clue that she was in that popular group, so why was it just her and her friends being invited to all those parties That s what really irked me from early on I guess it was just how unrealistic that little subplot was.Something that I really liked, however, about this book was Meg s confidence Meg was this unshakable person who embraced her faults If she was fat, she never gave any indication and didn t spend hours in front of the mirror sucking in their stomach and wishing for ten pounds to fall off their stomach She accepted the fact and still managed to be herself when she was around a boy she liked That sthan I can say for other people and book characters, who constantly shy away but slowly grow comfortable into their skin Meg was always confident and I really liked that about her.I think in the beginning, I found Meg a little hypocritical from time to time, but in the end it sort of evened out This is a perfect portrayal of high school, only a little less realistic, but great nonetheless Meg has a crush on a boy who s not interested in her, but her best friend, and Meg just wants to get through freshman year alive That s all Meg s really looking for I love the premise was all built on, and I really enjoyed getting that glimpse of freshman life, and I can just say that I hope it s not that wild. There was a ton of drama in here, which included cheating and being manipulated by the not so nice seniors It s actually a very cruel reality in high school I know that tons of boys like to take advantage of girls, and vice versa So I was happy to see a good storyline based off of a real high school atmosphere This had tons of emotions in it, enough to make you go crazy when some things happened, but also enough to keep you engaged throughout this book. When Alex was introduced, I felt that he did like Meg, but it was hard to tell, but then a bunch of things happened and I always love to read about drama and that stuff, no matter how weird I am, so I really liked this book for that drama aspect of it The thing was, I didn t really like Alex that much near the end because when they finally did get together, it seemed like Alex just wanted to make out instead of doing anything real, which really irked me And then it cut off randomly, and there s supposed to be a next book coming out soon, which isn t really what I was looking for I wanted to read a standalone, but I guess I ll just wait and see for the next one and hopefully it can get a higher score What I Loved As pathetic as it sounds, I loved how a main character named Megan got the lovable nickname Meggie So adorable It also must be said that Julie Prestsater writes so incredibly transparently that oftentimes I was head, and I could just feel her emotions so viscerally while reading her story. What I Didn t Like Quite frankly, the transparent writing that I referred to aboveseemed a little too much like a teenager s journal at the beginning of the book It felt as though I was constantly in this teen s head, hearing her every thought about what was happening and the people there, but with no real clue as to the story This wore off probably 15% into the book, and I really did enjoy the rest of it.Also, in that first 15% or so and a little bit later, but it stopped bugging me so much I really was stuck trying to figure out whether I felt like the character is in high school or only 14 I think this is the first time I really felt old as a person because the oldster in me had some issues with some of the happenings in Megan s life saying that a 14 year old shouldn t be thinking experiencing this or that When I thought of her as a highschooler, though, all such censoring tendencies went away Suffice it to say, if you have a problem with stuff that real teens do deal with drugs, alcohol, and sex, you d probably want to skip this book But I don t advise that course of action at all.My Overall ReviewAs stated earlier in the review, I did have some issues with this book At some point, however, it turned into a page turner that I couldn t put down Seriously I was going to go to sleep around 50% of the way through the book at 3am but I just had to read a little bitand next thing I knew, I was on the last sentence and it was 5 40am And before I went to sleep, I found myself emptying my Paypal account so I could secure book two in this series, Double Threat My Bleep despite the fact that I won t be able to read that for a very long time.I think in the end what makes this story so great is the honesty in which Megan tells her story While the reader does spend a lot and I do mean a lot of the first part of the book in Megan s head, at some point Megan starts to see outside her own thoughts, and she then tells a story that is gripping and will keep your interest all the way to the end I most certainly cannot wait to read the second book. This book was provided for me at no
